Basketball is the highest-scoring of the major US sports, with many possessions per game. That has a big effect on how odds work. Better teams win more consistently, spreads can be large, and the news about a single star player can swing a line by several points.
The main NBA markets
1. Point spread
The most popular NBA market.
- Home -6.5 (-110)
- Away +6.5 (-110)
The favorite must win by 7 or more. The underdog covers by winning or losing by 6 or fewer. NBA spreads can range from a point or two up to double digits in mismatches.
2. Moneyline
Pick the winner, including overtime.
- Home -250
- Away +205
Because the better team wins more consistently in basketball, moneyline prices on favorites can get very short.
3. Total
Combined points, usually somewhere around 200 to 240 depending on the teams and era.
- Over 224.5 (-110)
- Under 224.5 (-110)
Worked example: spread vs moneyline
Home team: -6.5 spread or -250 moneyline.
Stake 100 on the spread at -110:
- Wins by 7+: profit 90.91
- Wins by 1-6: lose
- Loses: lose
Stake 100 on the moneyline at -250:
- Wins by any margin: profit 40
- Loses: lose
Implied probability on the moneyline: 250 ÷ 350 = 71.4%. The spread is designed to be close to 50%.
How spreads relate to moneylines
There is a rough relationship between NBA spreads and win probability. Very roughly:
- A 3-point favorite wins about 60% of the time.
- A 7-point favorite wins about 75%.
- A 10-point favorite wins around 80% or more.
These are approximations, but they show why large NBA favorites have such short moneylines.
What moves NBA lines
Star availability
No other team sport depends as much on individual players. A top star sitting out can move a spread several points. Late news about star availability is one of the biggest causes of NBA line movement. See reading injury reports.
Rest and schedule
Back-to-back games, long road trips and the number of games in a short span can all affect performance. Teams sometimes rest healthy players, especially late in the season.
Pace
Some teams play fast and take many shots. Others play slowly. Pace affects totals more than spreads. Two fast teams can push a total higher.
Home court
Home advantage exists in the NBA but has varied over time. It is usually worth a couple of points on the spread. See home-field advantage.
Motivation and late-season context
Teams locked into playoff seeds, or out of contention, may rest players or prioritize development. This creates more uncertainty late in the season.
Halves, quarters and team totals
The NBA offers plenty of smaller markets:
- First-half spread and total
- Quarter lines
- Team totals (one team's points)
These can help you focus on one aspect, like a fast-starting team or a strong bench.
Common traps in basketball picks
Backdoor covers. A big favorite leads by 15 late, then rests starters, and the underdog scores late to cover. Late-game situations decide many spreads.
Overreacting to one game. A team that shoots unusually well one night often regresses the next.
Ignoring the news cycle. Star player status often isn't confirmed until shortly before tip-off. A pick made early can look very different by game time.
Laying big numbers on favorites. Large spreads are fair fights too. A team favored by 12 must win by 13.
Playoffs vs regular season
In the playoffs, rotations tighten, stars play more minutes, and teams play the same opponent repeatedly. Spreads and totals often adjust, and teams can make significant tactical changes between games in a series.
A simple NBA checklist
Before any NBA pick, run through four quick questions:
- Who is confirmed in and out? Check again close to tip-off.
- Where is each team in its schedule? Look for back-to-backs, the end of long road trips, or several games in a few nights.
- What pace do these teams play? Fast against fast leans toward higher totals.
- What does the price imply? Convert the moneyline to a percentage and ask honestly whether you agree.
If you can't answer the first question yet, it is often better to wait.
Practice NBA picks with play money
With lots of games and plenty of variables, the NBA is a great sport for learning. On MockSport you can make free play-money picks on spreads, moneylines and totals, then track your record across the season. Watching how late injury news moves lines is a lesson in itself. Start on the odds page.
FAQ
Do NBA moneylines include overtime?
Yes. Standard NBA moneylines, spreads and totals usually include overtime.
Why do NBA lines move so much close to tip-off?
Mostly because of player availability. Star status is often confirmed late, and a single star can be worth several points.
What is a backdoor cover?
It is when an underdog scores late, often after the result is decided, to cover the spread. It is common in basketball because scoring is frequent right to the end.
