An over/under, also called a total, is a pick on how many combined points, runs or goals both teams will score. You do not need to pick a winner at all. You just decide whether the final combined score goes over or under the number.
Totals are popular because they let you focus on how a game will be played, fast or slow, high-scoring or defensive, instead of who wins.
How a total works
A listing looks like this:
- Over 47.5 (-110)
- Under 47.5 (-110)
If the two teams combine for 48 or more, the over wins. If they combine for 47 or fewer, the under wins. The -110 is the price: risk 110 to win 100.
Worked example
NFL game total: 44.5
Final score: 24-17. Combined: 41. Under wins. Final score: 27-20. Combined: 47. Over wins.
If you picked the under with a 55 stake at -110:
- Profit = 55 × (100 ÷ 110) = 50
- Total return = 105
Whole numbers and pushes
If the total is a whole number, such as 45, and the teams combine for exactly 45, it is a push. Your stake comes back. Half-point totals avoid pushes.
Typical totals by sport
Totals vary hugely across sports. These are rough ranges to give you a feel, and actual numbers depend on the teams and conditions:
- NFL: usually in the high 30s to low 50s.
- College football: wider range, from the 40s to the 70s.
- NBA: usually somewhere around 200 to 240.
- MLB: commonly around 7 to 10 runs.
- NHL: commonly 5.5 or 6.5 goals.
- Soccer: commonly 2.5 goals.
In low-scoring sports like hockey and soccer, the total barely moves, but the price changes a lot. You might see Over 2.5 at -140 and Under 2.5 at +115. That tells you the market expects a slightly higher-scoring game than usual.
What drives a total
Pace. Teams that play faster create more possessions, and more possessions mean more scoring chances. This matters most in basketball and football.
Offense and defense quality. Obvious, but worth weighing both sides. A great offense facing a great defense can go either way.
Weather. Wind is the big one in football. Strong winds make passing and kicking harder, which tends to push totals down. In baseball, wind blowing out and warm air help the ball carry. See how weather affects football and baseball.
Ballparks and venues. In baseball, some parks are known for helping hitters and others for helping pitchers. Altitude is a notable factor for some venues.
Starting pitchers and goalies. In MLB and NHL, the individual on the mound or in net can move a total significantly.
Injuries. A missing quarterback or star scorer can lower a total. See reading injury reports.
Game situation. A big favorite may slow the game down when ahead. Late-game fouling in basketball can push a total over.
The psychology of overs
Many casual fans like picking overs because rooting for scoring is more fun. Every touchdown feels like progress. This public preference is one reason some people believe unders are sometimes slightly undervalued. It is not a guaranteed edge, but it is a reminder to separate what you want to watch from what you think will happen.
How live scoring changes the picture
During a game, totals update constantly. If an NFL game with a 44.5 total is 14-14 at halftime, the live total might be around 50. The market expects scoring to continue at a similar pace, though it also accounts for regression and game situation. Read how live games change win probability.
Team totals and half totals
You will also see:
- Team totals: how many points one team scores.
- First-half totals: combined score at halftime.
- Quarter or period totals: smaller slices of the game.
These follow the same logic and let you focus on a specific angle, like one team's offense or how a game starts.
A simple process for picking totals
- Note the total and convert the prices to implied probability.
- Ask what kind of game you expect: fast, slow, defensive, shootout.
- Check weather for outdoor games.
- Check injuries, especially quarterbacks, star scorers, pitchers and goalies.
- Decide whether you genuinely disagree with the number, not just whether you would like to see points.

FAQ
What does over 2.5 goals mean in soccer?
The over wins if the match ends with 3 or more total goals. The under wins with 0, 1 or 2 total goals.
Does overtime count toward the total?
In the NFL, NBA and NHL, standard totals usually include overtime. In soccer, totals usually count regular time plus stoppage time only. Always check the rules.
Why does the price change but not the number in hockey?
Hockey totals are usually 5.5 or 6.5. Instead of moving the number, oddsmakers adjust the price, like Over 5.5 at -125, to reflect the expected scoring.
