Save Percentage & GAA Calculator (Hockey)
Work out a goalie's save percentage and goals-against average for a game or a season.
How goalie stats are calculated
- Save percentage = (shots against − goals against) ÷ shots against
- Goals-against average = goals against × 60 ÷ minutes played
Example: 30 shots and 2 goals in a 60-minute game is 28 saves, a .933 save percentage and a 2.00 GAA. Over a season, 1,500 shots and 120 goals in 3,000 minutes is a .920 save percentage and a 2.40 GAA.
FAQ
How do you calculate save percentage?
Saves divided by shots against, where saves are shots against minus goals against. It is shown like .915, meaning 91.5% of shots were stopped.
How is goals-against average (GAA) calculated?
Goals against × 60 ÷ minutes played. It is the goals a goalie allows per full 60-minute game.
What is a good save percentage?
The NHL average has been around .900 to .905 in recent seasons, and .915 or better over a full season is excellent.
Why can a goalie have a good GAA but a low save percentage?
GAA also depends on the defense: a team that allows few shots helps the GAA. Save percentage looks only at the shots the goalie actually faced.
