Turn any record into a winning percentage, and see how far back a team is.
How winning percentage works
An 11-6 team has played 17 games and won 11, so its winning percentage is 11 ÷ 17 = .647. A 10-6-1 record counts the tie as half a win: 10.5 ÷ 17 = .618.
Games behind compares two records. If the leader is 12-5 and your team is 11-6, you are ((12 − 11) + (6 − 5)) ÷ 2 = 1 game behind.
FAQ
How do you calculate win percentage?
Wins divided by games played. With ties, the NFL counts each tie as half a win: (wins + ties ÷ 2) ÷ games.
Why is win percentage written like .647?
Standings show it as a decimal with three places and no leading zero, the same way as a batting average. .647 means the team wins 64.7% of its games.
How are games behind calculated?
((leader wins − your wins) + (your losses − leader losses)) ÷ 2. A team that is 2 games behind needs to win 2 more and lose 2 fewer to catch up.
Do NHL standings use win percentage?
The NHL ranks teams by points, not win percentage, but win percentage is still a handy way to compare records.
