How the slash line is calculated
- Batting average = hits ÷ at-bats
- On-base % = (hits + walks + hit by pitch) ÷ (at-bats + walks + hit by pitch + sacrifice flies)
- Slugging % = total bases ÷ at-bats
- OPS = on-base % + slugging %
Example: 150 hits in 500 at-bats is a .300 average. With 30 doubles, 2 triples and 25 home runs that is 259 total bases, a .518 slugging percentage.
FAQ
How do you calculate batting average?
Hits divided by at-bats. Walks, hit-by-pitches and sacrifices are not at-bats, so they don't change batting average.
What is the difference between OBP and batting average?
On-base percentage also counts walks and hit-by-pitches: (hits + walks + HBP) ÷ (at-bats + walks + HBP + sacrifice flies).
How is slugging percentage calculated?
Total bases divided by at-bats, where a single is 1 base, a double 2, a triple 3 and a home run 4.
What is a good OPS?
OPS is OBP plus slugging. Around .800 is good, .900 is excellent and 1.000 or more is elite over a full season.
