How NFL passer rating is calculated

The formula scores four parts, each between 0 and 2.375:

  • Completions: (completions ÷ attempts − 0.3) × 5
  • Yards: (yards ÷ attempts − 3) × 0.25
  • Touchdowns: (touchdowns ÷ attempts) × 20
  • Interceptions: 2.375 − (interceptions ÷ attempts) × 25

Add the four parts, divide by 6 and multiply by 100. For example, 24 of 35 for 280 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 interception works out to a 99.7 rating.

FAQ

What is a perfect passer rating?

158.3 in the NFL formula. Each of the four parts (completion %, yards per attempt, touchdown % and interception %) is capped at 2.375, so a quarterback who maxes out all four gets 158.3.

What is a good passer rating?

Around 90 to 100 is solid for a full NFL season, and above 100 is excellent. League averages have risen over the decades, so compare players from the same era.

Why is college passing efficiency different?

NCAA uses its own formula: (8.4 × yards + 330 × touchdowns + 100 × completions − 200 × interceptions) ÷ attempts. It has no cap, so the numbers run higher than NFL ratings.

Does passer rating count rushing or sacks?

No. It only uses passing attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns and interceptions.
