ERA Calculator (with WHIP)
Work out a pitcher's earned run average and WHIP from a box-score line.
How ERA is calculated
ERA = 9 × earned runs ÷ innings pitched. A pitcher who allows 2 earned runs in 6.1 innings (6 1/3) has an ERA of 9 × 2 ÷ 6.33 = 2.84 for that game.
Earned runs leave out runs that scored because of an error or a passed ball, so ERA measures the pitcher rather than the defense behind him.
FAQ
How do you calculate ERA?
Multiply earned runs by 9, then divide by innings pitched. It shows how many earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings.
What does 6.1 innings mean?
Box scores count outs after the dot: 6.1 is 6 innings and one out (6 1/3), 6.2 is 6 2/3. The calculator converts it for you.
What is a good ERA?
Under 3.00 is excellent for a starting pitcher, and around 4.00 is close to a typical MLB average in recent seasons.
What is WHIP?
Walks plus hits per inning pitched: (walks + hits) ÷ innings. It shows how many base runners a pitcher allows. Around 1.00 is elite and 1.30 is about average.
