True Shooting % Calculator (TS% and eFG%)
Measure how efficiently a basketball player scores, counting threes and free throws.
How the shooting numbers are calculated
- Points = 2 × field goals made + 3-pointers made + free throws made
- True shooting % = points ÷ (2 × (field goal attempts + 0.44 × free throw attempts))
- Effective FG % = (field goals made + 0.5 × 3-pointers made) ÷ field goal attempts
Example: 10 of 20 from the field (3 of 7 from three) and 5 of 6 free throws is 28 points, a 61.8% true shooting percentage and a 57.5% effective field goal percentage, against a plain 50.0% field goal percentage.
FAQ
What is true shooting percentage?
A shooting percentage that counts 3-pointers and free throws: points ÷ (2 × (field goal attempts + 0.44 × free throw attempts)). It shows how efficiently a player scores.
Why 0.44 for free throws?
Not every free throw ends a possession (and-ones, technicals, three-shot fouls), so 0.44 is the standard estimate of how many possessions a free throw attempt uses.
What is effective field goal percentage?
Field goal % with a bonus for 3-pointers: (field goals made + 0.5 × 3-pointers made) ÷ field goal attempts. A made three counts as 1.5 makes because it is worth 1.5 times as much.
What is a good true shooting percentage?
The NBA average has been around 57 to 58% in recent seasons. Above 60% is very efficient.
